Giants Among Us

During our first week in South Africa, we flew from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and then drove from Port Elizabeth to Port Alfred.  On the 90 minute drive we saw these huge mounds of dirt.  I asked one of the members what the big piles were that looked like giant ant hills.  She replied…"They ARE giant ant hills."

In the picture below, you can see how big they really are as President Wheeler stands next to one.  In James A. Michener's book on Africa entitled "THE COVENANT", it stated that men in the 1500's looked at the dirt in the ant hills for tiny flecks of gold and then continued to dig until they found gold.  Gold is one of Africa's most abundant natural resources.  I think we will go buy a shovel and see what we can find.

  1. Amazing! However, before you buy that shovel, maybe you should watch a national geographic special on African Ants "Siafu". But maybe you already know something about them, judging by the way President Wheeler is peering cautiously into that first anthill. lol.
